Return on investment (ROI) in sustainable building is now a reality. Rising costs of energy and water have surpassed the falling cost of sustainable components like solar panels (1).
Comparing a typical Australian 6 Star rated home (2) against a 7.5 Star integrated design it is now feasible to achieve 6% to 10% ROI after tax. If the sustainability savings are used to accelerate mortgage payments it is equivalent to saving between 2.5 and 5.5 years on a 25-year mortgage (3).
